Subsidized Membership for Applied Geochemists in Developing Countries

Of AAG’s current membership, approximately 70% come from three countries (Canada 26%, Australia 25% and the USA 18%), yet developing countries (as defined by the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee, DAC) account for only eight AAG memberships, less than 2% of the total membership. To support applied geochemists in developing countries, AAG offers subsidized membership to those who fulfil certain criteria. Subsidized membership includes provision of EXPLORE, Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis (GEEA), and ELEMENTS.

Developing countries are those shown in this list (PDF file), which is drawn from a compilation by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Development Assistance Committee (DAC) (www.oecd.org).

  1. AAG offers discounted membership at the rate of $US10 per year to appropriately qualified geoscientists from developing countries, who can show proof that they are either:
    1. Actively engaged in teaching applied geochemistry at a recognized institution, or
    2. Actively employed in the area of applied geochemistry at a recognized government institution, or
    3. Utilizing applied geochemistry for exploration or environmental studies for a private-sector company
  2. Discounted membership is not available to applied geochemistry practitioners who practice in developing countries, but originate from elsewhere.
  3. Recipients from developing countries who receive discounted AAG memberships must apply every two years for membership renewal at the subsidized rate.
  4. A maximum of 10 subsidized memberships will be supported each year.
  5. AAG members who would like to sponsor any new member to the association at the full membership of $US 100 are asked to contact the Chairman of the Admissions Committee (below).
